Rain

Well, the rain is lashing down in Sydney. Major storm warnings as a result of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald moving down the coast after battering Queensland. Isn't it odd when such a destructive force is given a charming name.

Yesterday, I met my Dad in town for lunch. Just the two of us, I cant even remember the last time we did that. It was so great to stop and chat one on one. And more importantly face to face, this makes a huge difference with deaf parents. We've vowed to do it more often. Make time.

I arrived early (friends of mine reading this will be shocked, it doesn't happen all too often) so I decided to take a little wander into the Royal Botanical Gardens to kill some time. Something else I've not done in years. It was a grey, wet day in Sydney so the walk was almost deserted save for a handful of poncho'd tourists and joggers.

I was struck again by the beauty of this harbour city, even under heavy grey skies. The best thing was the quiet. Just the sounds of rain drops on tree leaves, some birds and my footsteps. All this and the city skyline was ever present, towering just beyond the Moreton Bay Figs.

As I walked back from the Garden and around by the Sydney Opera House and on to meet my Dad for lunch, the bustle of the city soon consumed the hush. But the hour in the garden stilled my heart and head for the rest of the day.

"A portrait of my husband and our marriage, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Richard: sharing a laugh with my brother as we waited for our ride to a Friday night dinner and show.
We: had such a fun night taking in some stomping good Aussie music. Someone fancies himself as a bit of a beat boss after a few shandies...

Obviously, the second shot wasn't taken by me. I figure if I'm going to try and get 52 shots of Us and not end up with 52 selfies by the end of this year, I'm going to need help on the second portrait on occasion! This time, my brother Brett captured the moment.

Threads: Studs + Denim

I found this 80's studded denim prairie midi skirt online, hanging out on a Friday night with Etsy & red wine (favourite). I bought it from this store, along with a vintage black leather and gold glomesh handbag which was a gift for my sister's birthday. Both pieces are up there with my favourite finds. This skirt is rad. I love the shape and relaxed fit. I've only worn it with sandals so far, but I reckon it would look great with these heels <1, 2, 3, 4> on a casual night out for dinner with friends...

"A portrait of my husband and our marriage, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Richard: still a little uneasy with having the camera pointed at him (all the time now!) but he's so patient and supportive.
We: enjoyed a gorgeous Sydney Harbour sunset and pre-show meal before realising we were at the wrong venue. With five minutes to spare, we made it across town in record time.... and the show was incredible!

Garden Fresh

These beautifully vibrant photographs are from the Garden Fresh series by Jakarta-based artist, Agan Harahap. The vivid imagery of wild animals placed in situations that are inherently human really feels strangely like you're looking at yourself, echoes of Life of Pi

Agan says, "It is like a fable about a journey undertaken by the animals when they venture into our daily lives. The animals are confronted by a new reality that is in conflict with their natural habits and habitats."

I can relate to that zebra today. Some days, everything just feels a bit out of step, you know?

"A portrait of my husband and our marriage, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Richard: caught wave after wave. Perfect conditions, he said. My action man. I prefer to bob and float while he screams past.
We: finally taking our first step of many down this new path. Uncertain, hopeful.

Last light

A recent evening walk together in the last magical hour of light, followed with dinner at the local sushi restaurant.

Tonight we went for run together. I didn't enjoy that nearly as much (at all) !

Summer holidays

Down to our final days of summer holidays now. When I think back to how I was considering not taking any time off work, I'm left wondering where on earth my mind was at - it's been so great, so necessary.

We've had a couple of weeks off and the Little One joined us for the first week. She's usually here every second weekend throughout the year so the extra time is something all of us really cherish. There was frantic and hilarious present opening when she arrived on Boxing day, followed by a major dance off led by my sister, Amanda (as is her duty as the youngest to pass on our time honored traditions to the next youngest girl).  Those two have a wonderful bond, despite the fact that Amanda has been away for the last two years in London, they just simply picked up where they left off!

Over this last week, it's just been Richard and I. Sleeping in, reading books, going to shows, actually swimming at the beach and lying under a beach umbrella. I'm not going to lie, it's been pretty wonderful. We are lucky to have such time together as a family, as well as time as a couple.

Did I mention it's been HOT?! Extreme fire warnings announced for our state tomorrow, a catastrophic warning in some areas. We'll be trying to keep cool, staying close to news reports and hoping for minimal damage or loss to people's homes and livelihoods. If you're in areas at risk, my thoughts are with you and your families. Stay safe!

"A portrait of my husband and our marriage, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Richard: prefers to read eBooks, usually Sci-Fi. Currently reading Wool, apparently "a real page turner" !
We: have resolved to try and eat earlier and take more evening walks together.
