"A portrait of my husband and our marriage, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Richard: whale spotter.

We: live a short drive from this breathtaking view. This cityscape is just under 250 years old, quite young in the grand scheme of things. We once stopped at a service station in England with a toilet over a hundred years older than this view!

Great fun at an 80's themed party.

Procrastinate

Over the weekend I had work deadlines looming, anxiety over meeting them making me feel heavy and lead-footed. Fortunately, having to work on a weekend doesn't happen often but I resent it all the same. I knew I had to put in a few good hours but I kept putting it off.

Sunday morning rolled around and despite promising myself that I would get up early and get it done before anything else, the sun shone bright and my loves and I took the morning slowly.

We packed a picnic and spent hours at the park followed by a stint by the sea on our way home. The little one chased the shore and clambered over rock pools while we soaked in the last of the afternoon sun.

I worked very late into the night. I didn't mind too much. The distractions were worth it.

Richard: when you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you...

We: the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night...

“Seems to me it ain't the world that's so bad but what we're doing to it, and all I'm saying is: see what a wonderful world it would be if only we'd give it a chance. Love, baby - love. That's the secret.”

Wonderland, by Kirsty Mitchell

The Lavender Princess.
Don't you love when art stops you in your tracks and it's like time stands still while you explore every detail. I'm so enraptured by Kirsty Mitchell's incredible work and story that it's almost too hard to gather my thoughts to tell you about it. When I spied the dramatic lavender scene above, I had to know where it came from, who was responsible, how it was done and why. Such intensity and beauty, I found it utterly compelling.

Kirsty's background is primarily in fashion and costume design but I think it's fair to say she's a 'multi-passionate' artist. Kirsty's world was turned completely upside down and inside out when her mother passed away from a brain tumour in 2008. From the depths of her grief and despair after loosing someone she had been so very close to, someone who had taught to believe in beauty, wonder and using your imagination, rose this concept of Wonderland.

Wonderland is a photography series that consists of sixty eight images or 'scenes' so far that have taken four years to make. Kirsty is still working on the final seven scenes of Wonderland that are due to be released in the coming months. Each image transports you to a place filled with ethereal woodland characters, where imagination and possibilities are limitless. As I started to explore Wonderland, I truly did feel like I was tumbling down the rabbit hole. All of the props, costumes you see in each scene was created by Kirsty by hand, many taking months of preparation to complete. All that in addition to setting up the perfect location, which meant sometimes waiting for tiny window of seasonal opportunity to capture incandescent flower fields in full bloom. Kirsty's commitment to the scenes she first saw in her dreams and was compelled to recreate is astounding - none of these images have been photoshopped. This blows my mind.

Gaia's Promise.
The Faraway Tree.
The Storyteller.
What a breathtaking tribute to her mother. An incredibly sacred, secret Wonderland that belongs to the two of them. We're just lucky enough to be imbued by the beauty of their bond, through the looking glass.

You can see all of the Wonderland images, read all the behind the scenes stories and Kirsty's honest and emotional diary that accompanies the entire four year journey on her website, here. It's really worth the visit.

"A portrait of my husband and our marriage, once a week, every week, in 2013."

Richard: Favourite musical artists include ~ but not restricted to ~ Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Donnie Hathaway.

We: are a family. Lately, everywhere I look I see pregnant women, babies, families. I know everyone has their life challenges, but some days it's just hard to accept that making babies is mine. I will never take this gift of being a step-mum for granted.

Op shopping, the spills and thrills

I didn't buy these chairs when I saw them at a local op shop last week. And I'm still gutted about it. I've been looking for an upholstery project to work on with my Dad for a while now, and these guys would have been perfect! My mind just wasn't on the job, I was looking for vintage scrabble games at the time, I took these snaps and breezed out of the store thinking hmmm, maybe but the light bulb hadn't gone off.

By the time I got home, I'd already imagined the type of fabric we'd recover them with and how amazing they would look modernised and freshened up. I HAD to return the next day to get them.

It wasn't to be. I returned to find that someone else had beat me to it. Well played, op shopping shape shifter, well played.

On the upside however, since I was there anyway, I did the obligatory hot lap and scored a couple of prize finds.

All for under twenty bucks! I adore the dress, and was amazed to find that it still had the sale tags attached. It's pretty rare to find a vintage dress that hasn't ever been worn. After being inspired by our local speakeasy style bar, I plan on putting tea lights in those beautiful cut glass jugs and watch the light dancing off the crystal as we sit under nana blankets drinking red wine this winter.
